Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Historical films serve as an engaging medium for educating audiences about past events, cultural heritage, and national identity. In Nigeria, where the teaching of history in schools has often been inconsistent, films offer an alternative means of preserving and disseminating historical knowledge (Ibrahim & Ahmed, 2023). Historical films like October 1 and Half of a Yellow Sun not only entertain but also inform audiences, particularly youths, about key events in Nigerian history. In Keffi North Local Government Area, Nasarawa State, where access to formal education is sometimes limited, historical films play a critical role in shaping youths’ understanding of the nation’s past. This study investigates the influence of historical films on the historical knowledge of youths in Keffi North, exploring their impact on awareness and appreciation of Nigerian history.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The decline in the teaching of history in Nigerian schools has led to a knowledge gap among youths regarding the nation’s heritage and historical milestones. While historical films have the potential to fill this gap, their accuracy and effectiveness in enhancing historical knowledge are often questioned (Okafor & Musa, 2024). In Keffi North, where media consumption among youths is high, the extent to which historical films influence their understanding of Nigerian history remains underexplored.

The findings provide insights for filmmakers, educators, and policymakers aiming to leverage media for historical education and cultural preservation.
